ABOUT MICHELLE
I was raised in Rio Rancho, and have navigated my life with clear purpose and an eagerness to make a difference.
Like many New Mexico families, my parents worked hard to get by. My father was a mechanic and my mom stayed home to raise us. As a child, my parents relied on food stamps and free lunch programs to help make ends meet. They took little for granted because they knew they were building a new future and a new freedom for our family.
I now reap the benefits of the foundation they laid for me and I’m honored to take the torch and keep running—for a new future for all of us.
Since graduating UNM, I have worked in both the public and private sector — in policy and finance.
While working at a bank, I helped many families as they navigated their personal and business expenses and worked closely with the CEO to champion green business practices. At the Sandoval County Treasurer's office, I supported responsible taxpayer investments and lobbied the legislature to protect property tax exemptions for veterans. Today, I work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) ensuring that our state remains at the cutting edge of technology, national safety and security.
It’s my working-class roots that drive my desire to create an economy that lifts families up. I will fight for a great education for our kids, healthcare that's affordable and accessible, housing people can afford, and safe and crime free communities.
I am married to Misael Castillo, who serves in the U.S. National Guard on active duty, and we have a 2-year old daughter.
As a military wife and new mother, I know what it’s like to lead a life of service. I’ve served our state for years and now, I’m ready to deliver for our community.
